Super Cheesy Ube Hot Cross Buns
All I have to say is expect the unexpected from me. Hehe. I give you Super Cheesy Ube Hot Cross Buns and I am so super excited about it. Testing of this dough took 3 tries. No one was complaining as it was THAT GOOD. I used ube powder and it's easy to find on Amazon. So no more talking. Let's bake!
Ube Hot Cross Buns Ingredients
You will need the following ingredients:
- Bread Flour
- Ube Powder
- Milk Powder
- Yeast
- Super Fine Cane Sugar
- Salt
- Vegetable Oil
- Water
How to Make Ube Hot Cross Buns
Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl and then add in the water and oil.
Mix with a dough hook until you get shaggy looking dough. Then mix on low for 10 minutes until it starts to pull away from the bowl. Oil a bowl and shape the dough into a ball and leave to rise in a warm area for and hour or two depending on how hot or cold your house is.
Take a 9x13 baking dish and brush with melted butter. I always use this vegan butter, but feel free to use any butter you love. Then lightly dust with some super fine baking sugar.
Roll out the dough slightly and top with cheese. Fold the dough over and kneed until the cheese has been incorporated with the dough.
Cut into 12 even pieces and roll into a ball and place on the baking dish. The tops of the dough with more butter. Leave to rise for an hour.
Pre-heat your oven to 350C and just before baking brush the tops of the dough with more butter and lightly sprinkle with super fine baking sugar.
Bake for 25-30 minutes until the tops have browned slightly.
Leave to cool while you make the sweet cheese frosting.
How to Make Sweet Cheese Frosting
It took me a few tries to figure this one out. What I did was dissolve 2 tablespoons of the cheese powder you find in the mac and cheese boxes into room temperature milk.
Then mixed that into ¼ cup of pre-made vanilla frosting. It worked!
Once the Ube Hot Cross Buns have cooled down pipe crosses over each bun.
I love them lightly toasted spread with either more of the frosting or just plain butter.
These Ube Hot Cross buns are best eaten on the same day they are baked. However if you do have some left over, lightly toast in the oven. Note if you do that the cheese frosting will melt into the buns and that is not a bad thing at all.
