Ohh a Healthy Halo Halo with made with fresh fruit, milk and coconut whip. A nice and simple refreshment that you can still mix mix.
What Is Halo Halo?
Traditionally Halo Halo is made with fruit and chickpeas that have been soaked in sugar syrup and topped with flan and ice cream.ย Sure the ice dilutes the sweetness it a little bit, but that’s way too much sugar for my taste buds.
This Healthy Halo Halo version uses fresh fruit and coconut milk and coco whip.ย With the addition of lemon balm it provides a refreshing and cooling snack that won’t weigh you down.ย
What Special Equipment Do You Need?
You do need one special piece of equipment which is a shave ice maker.ย As a Filipino it is one of the things we always have in the cupboard to make our own Halo Halo when the mood strikes.
There is a modern electric version you can get or if you are more an off the grid type of person you can get this handheld ice shaver. Which is what we use in the Philippines.
What Ingredients Do You Need to Make This Healthy Halo Halo
- Your favorite fresh fruits. We used melon and strawberries for that fruity freshness.
- Dairy Free Milk. Coconut Milk is a good option, almond or oat are good choices too.
- Dairy Free Coconut Whip or any kind of ice cream. Ube is a good option too and more traditional.
- Ice of course that has been shaved.
- Mint or Lemon balm for some herby flavor.
How To Make Healthy Halo Halo
First prepare the fruit, then evenly distribute the fruit between two glasses. Add the shaved ice over the fruit making sure it is tightly packed. Then pour the milk over the shaved ice. Top with coconut whip or ice cream.
How to Eat it
Serve and eat the healthy halo halo right away. Some eat each layer from the top down, but the best way to eat it is to mix everything together.
It does start to get messy when you start the halo halo (translated to mix mix) process.ย It’s part of the fun too!
