    Healthy Halo Halo Recipe

    Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Ohh a Healthy Halo Halo with made with fresh fruit, frozen coconut water and buko ice cream. A nice and simple refreshment that you can still mix mix.

Healthy Halo Halo with mixed fresh fruit.

    What Is Halo Halo?

Traditionally Halo Halo is made with fruit and chickpeas that have been soaked in sugar syrup and topped with flan and ice cream.  Sure the ice dilutes the sweetness it a little bit, but that's way too much sugar for my taste buds.

This Healthy Halo Halo version uses a variety of fresh fruit, frozen coconut water and a scoop of buko ice cream.

What Special Equipment Do You Need?

You do need one special piece of equipment which is a shave ice maker.  As a Filipino it is one of the things we always have in the cupboard to make our own Halo Halo when the mood strikes.

There is a modern electric version you can get or if you are more an off the grid type of person you can get this handheld ice shaver. Which is what we use in the Philippines.

What Ingredients Do You Need to Make This Healthy Halo Halo

Pint of buck ice cream, frozen coconut water, plate of mixed diced fresh fruit, jar of nata de coco.
    • Your favorite fresh fruits diced so that it's easier to eat. We used mango, grapes and strawberries for that fruity freshness. Feel free to use any fruit you have make it as colorful as possible to make it look like fruit confetti!
    • Nata De Coco - We love the chew that is almost similar to jello. You can get a jar at your local Filipino grocery store.
    • Frozen Coconut Water - For that extra boost of hydration. You can use regular water and freeze it as well.
    • Buko Ice Cream - Buko means young coconut and it can also be made into an ice cream. It's lighter than full on coconut ice cream, but you can use that too. Ube is a good option too and more traditional.

How To Make Healthy Halo Halo

First dice your fruit. Prepare a cup of each fruit and dice into small pieces. Add the Nata De Coco over the fruit and top with shaved frozen coconut water (or just regular water).

Finally top with a scoop of Buko Ice cream. That is it! What a simple beauty right?

    How to Eat it

Serve and eat the healthy halo halo right away. Some of each layer from the top down, but the best way to eat it is to mix everything together.

    All mixed

It does start to get messy when you start the halo halo (translated to mix mix) process.  It's part of the fun too!

Fresh fruit, ice and nata de coco.
