Malunggay Iced Latte is made with malunggay powder and plant based milk. It is a great latte alternative if you want to avoid caffeine.
Malunggay is near and dear to many Filipino's. In other parts of the world it is also known as Moringa. In the Philippines this tree grows in random places. You can see it in the middle of the road or in the center of a bukid (green area). My dad's family has several of these trees in their ancestral home.
It is known as the most nutritious leaf in the Philippines and great for increasing milk production in new mothers amongst other health benefits. Today we are going to have it the most western way possible. In a latte.
Malunggay Latte a Layered Version
This latte is layered with almond milk and shaken malunggay. I learned this method from Oh How Civilized. The key to have the lovely layered look is to weigh down the milk with a sweetener. Then top it off with the malunggay on top.
Ingredients
Malunggay Powder - I would recommend purchasing from these two POC women owned businesses. Filiflavors and Diaspora Co.
1 Cup Milk - Here you can use any milk you choose.
1 Teaspoon Sweetener - You need to use something with heft like honey or maple syrup. I used date syrup as my sweetener of choice.
Ice - Slightly crushed ice works well here.
Cold Water - to mix with the malunggay powder
Note: A key equipment that you would need for this recipe is a cocktail shaker. If you don't have one you can use water bottle instead.
How to Make Malunggay Iced Latte
First pour in your milk and sweetener into your shaker. Shake really aggressively for at least 30 seconds. Strain that into a glass then add in the ice.
Wash out the shaker you are using and add in the cold water and malunggay powder. Shake again really really hard for 30 seconds. Pour that over the sweet milk and ice.
Stir and enjoy your Malunggay Iced Latte.
Questions You May Have
It does not taste anything like Matcha, if that is what you are looking for. It tastes more like a very aggressive leaf. Especially when it is in powder form. It kind of has a lingering spiciness unique to dried malunggay.
You can order it from Filiflavors or Diaspora Co.
