In this post I'll take you though on how to put together your own chic and modern cake decorating party. It's the perfect mommy and me activity that will help the kids keep busy during the summer.
Super Chic and Modern Cake Decorating Party
I recently hosted a Super chic and modern cake decorating party and I wanted to show you how I did it so that you can host your own. Cake decorating satisfies all ages and just brings out everyone's creative side. All you need are some mini cakes, frosting, some flair and of course the cutest packaging to take it home in.
The Cakes
Having a variety of cake flavors without going overboard is key. I provided three flavors. For our event Miss Jones Baking Co provided the cake mixes and this was our cake layer menu:
- Vanilla
- Chocolate
- Pandan
The classic flavors of vanilla and chocolate are in there along with Pandan just to add a little Filipino flavor to the mix.
Making the Mini's
To make the little mini cakes I made each batter according to the directions on the box and then baked the in a 10x15 inch sheet pan. Making sure that it's spread evenly. Baking it in a baking pan only take the cakes 10 minutes to cook. I let it fully cool at room temperature then I place the whole sheet pan in the freezer for 30 minutes to harden.
Freezing the whole sheet of cake is so important as if you cut it while it is soft, you will not get the sharp clean edges. You also don't want it too frozen when you cut out the cakes as it will crack. I found that just 30 minutes in the freezer is the perfect consistency to cutting out little round of cake.
Find a 1 inch round cookie cutter and just start cutting out rounds of cake out of the sheet. Try to cut the circles as close to each other so that you can get as many cakes as you can. I can get up to 40 little cakes out of 1 sheet cake.
Prepping the mini cakes
Once you have all the 40 cakes all cut out put them in a large 1 gallon zip lock bag and store them in the freezer until decorating day. So that it's not overwhelming you can bake all these cakes and cut them up, up to a week before the event. I did one flavor of cake each day and had them ready in the freezer to go.
Oh if you are wanting to add flavor to the vanilla cake like I did, I made it the same way and just added 1 heaping teaspoon of Pandan Powder.
The Frosting
Miss Jones Baking Co also provided the frosting and this is is what we chose to mix and match with the cake layers:
- Vanilla
- Chocolate
- Cream Cheese
- Confetti
To make the frosting easier to handle and really for sanitary reasons I transferred the frosting into it's own piping bag. This avoids double dipping, because you know it will happen with kids. I placed labels to the piping bags to identify each flavor, as the cream cheese and vanilla look exactly the same. Adding a little bow around the pipping bags also ups the cute factor.
The Flair
I like variety when decorating my own cakes and also using herbs and edible flowers. This is what I provided for everyone to decorate with:
- A variety of Sprinkle Colors (so you can make your own mix of colors)
- Edible Rose Buds
- Dried Cornflowers
- Camomile Flowers
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Lemon Verbena
When I set it all up, the instructions were to pick cake layers, frosting and flair as you wish. Everyone can mix and match anything. That is the beauty of laying it all out.
The Packaging
Honestly, I think the packaging took the longest time to figure out for this Modern Cake Decorating Party. I needed a way to display and transport the cakes when they were finished. There was lots of hours time spent on wedding favor and baking supply sites and etsy to figure out what I was after.
Finally I came upon these clear cupcake boxes that had black and white bases. They were so so perfect to fit two mini cakes in and they closed and opened in a way that it wouldn't ruin the cakes.
One trick to make sure the cakes didn't move on the way home was to secure them with a toothpick. Just before the top frosting was pipped we poked a toothpick all the way through the base so that the cakes would not sway.
Snacks
You always need snacks when hosting a party. I kept it simple with shrubs for the mama's and juice for the littles. For eats everyone had strawberries, crackers and a mix of dried fruit and nuts.
Take Home Gifts
The great thing about a Modern Cake Decorating Party is that what they made is also the gifts they will take home. This is why I really wanted the packaging to be on point.
To take it to the next level I added some transparent labels and black ribbon and I have to say, it was what I was exactly what I wanted to see. To finish off the boxes I cut off some olive branches from my neighbors tree and made them the finishing touch.
Thank you!
I just wanted to say a huge huge thank you to Miss Jones Baking Co for providing the cake mixes and frostings for our Super Chic and Modern Cake Decorating Party.
And also to Purely Drinks for providing all the flavors of their Q Soo Sparkling Shrubs.
Of course to my Fashion Mama's. Thank you so much for letting me host at the most awesome venue Batch SF. To our intrepid photographer Melissa de Mata, thank you so much for documenting the morning for us. The photos are beautiful.
