    Strawberries in the Philippines

Did you know that strawberries are grown in the Philippines? They were brought to the islands by the Spaniards. It was grown in the mountain highlands as they need a less humid cooler climate. At that time they were not really widely grown.

During the American occupation of the Philippines in the early 1900's it was grown much more to feed the Americans who came to the Philippines to eat with their salads.

It is said it was the Japanese who came before WWI and integrated into the population helped farm the strawberries.

Baguio is widely known for growing strawberries, but can also be found in Cebu, Cavite and parts of Mindanao.

    The more you know right?

    Strawberries and Cream Halo Halo

Now for this Strawberries and Cream Halo Halo. It actually reminds me of a traditional Eaton Mess. Very English and very summer.

This Halo Halo is very easy to make and hopefully you already have everything in your pantry, fridge and freezer to make this quick dessert.

    The Ingredients!

Strawberry Jam - Use your favorite strawberry jam for this.

Fresh Strawberries - You will need to dice them into small pieces.

Macapuno - Gives a little chewy bite.

Shaved Ice - You will need about 2 cups of shaved ice per serving

Milk - Any kind of milk will do. Regular, evaporated or even plant based milk. Coconut milk is also a good option.

Vanilla or Buko Ice Cream - Anything nice and creamy will do.

Meringue - I like to use the premade ones from the grocery store. You are going to crush them and sprinkle them on top. Just like an Eaton Mess!

Buko ice cream, jar of meringues, jar of strawberry jam, jar of macapuno and fresh pint of strawberries.

    How to Make It

First you are going to put about a tablespoon of strawberry jam on the bottom of your glass and spread some up on the sides of the glass.

Next add about 4-5 diced strawberries.

Then add a tablespoon of macapuno on top of the strawberries.

Now it is time to add the shaved ice. Don't forget to pack it down and pour milk all over. Add more ice if needed along with a bit more milk.

Finally finish with a scoop of vanilla or Buko ice cream and the crushed pieces of meringue. Now it's a strawberries and cream Halo Halo.

Ice cream on top of ice.

How to Eat Strawberries and Cream Halo Halo

There are two ways to eat your Strawberries and Cream Halo Halo.

    1. Eat it bit by bit from the top.
    2. Mix mix it all up so that you get a bit of everything. That is the best way to eat it!
